How to clean oysters step by step?
The process of cleaning oysters is surprisingly fast and simple. It only takes you a few minutes. Fishermen’s Net has listed for you 6 simple steps to clean an oyster.
- Step 1:
Place your oysters in a large colander with some ice to keep them fresh
Place your oysters in a big and large colander. It is highly recommended for you, especially the beginners, to use batches if you are cleaning a huge number of oysters. If you prepare a great amount of oysters, you can also do this with a big bucket and hose outside. It is up to you!
- Step 2:
Then, gently rinse the oysters with cold water. It is advised that you should rinse each of them carefully, just like what you would do with other types of fresh seafood.
Note: DO NOT RINSE YOUR OYSTERS WITH HOT WATER. Oysters are raw seafood, it is advised that seafood should be handled with cold water for food safety. If possible, keep the oysters on crushed ice or small ice cubes when washing them.
- Step 3:
If it is possible, please keep all the oysters in a large pan and cover them with crushed ice/ small ice cubes when washing them. The ice will not only keep the oysters cold, but it also helps you to rub off the dirt on the oysters more easily.
- Step 4:
Use a scrub to clean your oysters. Clean them carefully
Next, if the oyster shells have lots of gunks and grims, just use a scrub brush, or maybe a toothbrush if you don’t have any scrub brush at home to remove excess mud.
- Step 5:
The last step is checking each oyster for open shells before shucking or cooking.
Warning: If you find any oysters that have shells opened, do not cook or consume them. They might have already spoiled.
- Step 6:
Then, suck your oysters and eat them raw
Once all the oysters are clean, you can shuck the oysters for raw eating. You can also cook them by your own ways, such as grill, steam or even boil.
Warning: If you shuck an oyster and it is filled with mud inside, don’t hesitate to throw it away. This oyster may not be safe to eat raw.
